The Tide in Texas Proudly Supports

The Lee Roy Jordan Endowed Scholarship Fund

One of the most important functions of the Tide in Texas North Texas Alabama Alumni Chapter is raising funds for

the Lee Roy Jordan Endowed Scholarship Fund.

The recipient of the Lee Roy Jordan Scholarship Fund receives a $4,000 scholarship/year for 4 years while attending the University of Alabama.

As of July 1, 2008, the North Texas Chapter has raised over $80,000 for the Lee Roy Jordan Endowed Scholarship Fund. In 2008, the North Texas Chapter contributed approximately $4,200 to the scholarship fund. These funds are raised through Membership dues, raffles held during game watching parties, individual donations, and fund-raisers like our silent auction at the summer banquet.

Mr. Jordan remains an Active supporter of the North Texas Alumni Association.

Lee Roy Jordan played for the University of Alabama from 1960-1962. In his sophomore season of 1960, he helped the Crimson Tide to an 8-2-1 record, finishing the year with a 3-3 tie against University of Texas at Austin in the Bluebonnet Bowl. Jordan was named MVP of the game. The following season, Alabama recorded an 11-0 record and won the 1961 National Championship. In his final season with the Crimson Tide, Jordan was a first team All-American, helped his team to a 10-1 record, and was named the outstanding player of the Orange Bowl when he made 30 tackles en route to a 17-0 victory over the University of Oklahoma.

Legendary Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant said, "Lee Roy was the best college linebacker - bar none. He would have made every tackle on every play if they had stayed in bounds."

Jordan was the Dallas Cowboys' top pick in the 1963 draft and was a key member of the Cowboys' famed "Doomsday Defense." The 14-seasons he played in Dallas ties him with only four others for the second longest-playing tenure in franchise history.

In his 14 seasons, Jordan became a two-time All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowler while playing in three Super Bowls and five NFC Championship games. After a 13-year wait following his retirement, Jordan became the seventh member of the Cowboys' exclusive Ring of Honor in 1989.

Amazingly, more than 25 years after his retirement, Jordan still holds Cowboys records for career solo tackles with 743, is second in career assisted tackles with 493 and, of course, holds the career combined tackles record with 1,236. Jordan still holds the third and fourth highest totals of solo tackles in a single season with 100 in 1975 and 97 in 1968.

Chapter members should be aware that any funds sent to the Lee Roy Jordan Endowed Scholarship Fund are matched each year by the University of Alabama National Alumni Association. The amount matched varies from year to year based on receipts collected. In 2008, the matching amount was 81% for a total of $3,500 contributed by the National Alumni Association to the scholarship fund.So if you donate $100 to the scholarship fund, not only do you get to take a federal tax deduction, the National Alumni Association puts in another $80.00 to $100.00 on your behalf! This matching amount is good for any amount, even $5.00. So when renewing your membership or attending one of our events, please consider giving a few extra dollars for this fund.
